A Powwow is a festival for Native Americans. There are different reasons for Powwows. One is for demonstrations that the dancers are paid to show off their dances and culture that someone in the community who might have an interest. These may only last for a few hours. Other Powwows may last over a weekend or even a week. These usually are competition. Food and craft vendors set up to sell their things. When you are not watching the dancers, you can walk around and visit with people. Everyone is invited to go to the Powwows whether you are Native American or not. Native American people want everyone to come to enjoy their culture.
Where the dancers perform is called the ring, and it is considered sacred. Here they do more than just dance, babies are introduced to their culture, military heros are honored, or money is given to someone in need. If the dancers are taking a break, they might have a singing. Overall the Powwow is a place to relax and enjoy the festivities.
